I’m finally making my way down my list of must try new restaurants in Austin – especially in July! There are so so many on my list and I think I add at least 3 every week. The food scene in Austin is still booming! Have you been to any or all of these new spots yet?
Diner Bar
I was so excited to visit the Diner Bar’s Austin location as the Owner, Mashama Bailey, is a James Beard Award winner as well as a legend! If you like pretty hotels, Diner Bar is in the newly opened Thompson Hotel and it is GORGEOUS!
If you’re an oyster lover like me, they have some of the best I’ve eaten – and pro tip, oysters are just $2 each during happy hour (which is all night on Sundays and Mondays). Loved their Wonder When cocktail and wine selection. Do not pass up the Deviled Eggs with Smoked Trout Roe or the Lamb Crepinette. The Shrimp and Carolina Gold Rice dish was divine – so bright and vibrant! Save room for dessert trust me!

La Taquicardia
This gem of a food truck, La Taquicardia, is posted up at Southern Heights Brewing and if you haven’t been yet, what are you waiting for? Their menu is huge and you won’t go wrong with whatever you choose – whether it’s tacos, baby tacos, gorditas, quesadillas or nachos! I highly recommend their cochinita pibil, pastor, mole tacos, mole enchiladas, nachos of any kind, chicken gorditas and cheese wrapped burrito. Let me know if you try something there and love it so I can order it when I go back!

Burrata House
Who doesn’t love creamy, gooey burrata? Well, now you can have burrata everything at the newly opened Burrata House in the Mueller area!
From bowls, to paninis, to pastas, they have something for everybody – even gluten free bread and quinoa if that’s your thing!
I tried the proscuitto panini and really liked it. The pomodoro was also delicious and a large portion! Highly recommend ordering the pesto spread for some extra something something! I’ll be back to try the salmone bowl, pesto pasta and the turkey panini.

Maie Day
To say I’ve been excited and anticipating the opening of Maie Day is an understatement! I love everything and anything that Chef Fojtasek and Chef Stoddart have to do with and this is another amazing restaurant to add to their portfolio. It’s a Community Chophouse so you’ll find things like tartare, whole fish, pork chop, prime rib and a strip. It’s located at the stunning South Congress Hotel and the restaurant is spacious and beautifully decorated.
I ordered the Smoked Fish Dip, Cold Shaved Prime Rib, Mac ’n Cheese, Grilled Green Beans, and the Half Roasted Chicken. Every bite was exceptional and I’m still thinking about my meal. It’s pricy don’t get me wrong – I’d recommend going with a small group and ordering several items and sharing! Please save room for dessert – the Texas Chocolate Cake is heaven! And the seasonal cheesecake is unlike any you’ve eaten!
If you park in the South Congress Hotel, they do validate up to a couple of hours!
Local Foods
I’ve been a loyal fan of Local Foods dating back to my Houston days when I traveled there weekly for work for a year. Local Foods features seasonal, local ingredients and really yummy creative dishes that are relatively healthy!
My favorites are the Truffled Egg Salad Sandwich, ‘Crunchy’ Chicken Sandwich, Garden Sammie, Texas Caesar to name a few.
Parking is tricky since this is downtown. I believe they validate at the garage at the Amli on 2nd during the week, but there is paid street parking nearby as well.
I’ll be back with more suggestions soon so stay tuned.
Until then, Bon Appetite,
Shveta
